Getting to Capri from Positano looks easy. The island sits right there on the horizon, close enough to touch, and you want to set off right away. The real question is how to get there without losing half a day to timetables, crowded piers and transfers you have to sort out yourself.
We live here and take guests to Capri every day. For anyone planning a day trip to Capri from Positano, we’ve put together two options: a small group tour with pick up from your accommodation, or a private boat all to yourself. Either way, we take care of the organisation.
Small group boat tour to Capri from Positano, with pick up
This is the perfect choice if you want to see Capri from the sea and on land, in good company, without worrying about a thing.
Our private shuttle picks you up at your accommodation in Positano and takes you to the port of Massa Lubrense. That’s not a random choice: Massa Lubrense is the closest point on the coast to Capri, so the crossing takes about half an hour, and you leave from a quiet little harbour instead of the crowded piers of Sorrento or Positano.
From there you board in a small group and cross the bay to the island.
Around the island by sea
Before landing, we cruise all the way around Capri, which is the best way to see it. We pass Marina Grande and the Scugnizzo statue, then the Blue Grotto, the Coral Grotto, the White Grotto and the Green Grotto, the Natural Arch, Villa Malaparte, the Faraglioni, the bay of Marina Piccola and Punta Carena. The skipper is also your guide, sharing the history and stories behind every corner, in English and Italian.
There’s a swim stop in Capri’s clear waters, with snorkelling gear available on request, and on board you’ll find snacks, drinks and a glass of prosecco.
Free time on the island
Then you go ashore and have about four hours to yourself. Stroll through the Piazzetta, ride up to Monte Solaro for a view over the whole island, have lunch wherever you like or, if you want, visit the Blue Grotto on your own.
Getting back
At the end of the day the boat brings you back to Massa Lubrense and the shuttle drops you off at your accommodation in Positano. No buses to chase, no queues at the pier.
The tour runs every day and is pet friendly, so your dog can come along. You’ll find all the details here: Small Group Capri Boat Tour.
Private boat to Capri from Positano: the island all to yourself
If you’d rather not share your day, or you’re travelling as a family, a couple or a group of friends, a private boat gives you the most freedom.
You leave straight from Positano port. The boat is yours alone, with skipper and hostess on board, and fuel, snacks and drinks included, for a day of about eight hours. You plan the route together with the skipper: more time swimming in hidden coves, a stop for lunch, the full tour of the island with its grottos and the Faraglioni, or a few hours ashore in Capri. You set the pace.
We have several boats to suit different styles and group sizes:
- Gozzo Sorrentino Apreamare 7.50: the classic gozzo, ideal for couples, families or small groups of friends.
- Gozzo Jeranto 9 m: wood and traditional lines, perfect for slow cruising along the coast.
- Gozzo Apreamare 35: the traditional gozzo with a modern twist, more space and more comfort.
- Gozzo Apreamare 38: up to 12 guests, great for larger groups.
- Lancia Aprea 52: a luxury yacht inspired by the historic Sorrento lancia, for those who want the most space and elegance.
- Raffaelli Shamal Evo 13 m Yacht: powerful and well equipped, for arriving in Capri in style.
Not sure which one to choose? Tell us how many of you there are and what kind of day you have in mind, and we’ll suggest the right boat for your trip to Capri from Positano.
A few practical tips
Bring your swimsuit, beach towel, sunscreen, hat and flip flops, and of course your camera. Keep in mind that Capri charges a landing tax, paid separately. And if the sea isn’t safe enough to go out, we’ll let you know in good time: we’d rather move your day than ruin it.
Capri from Positano: small group or private boat?
If you want to enjoy Capri in good company, with easy pick up from your accommodation and a few free hours on the island, the small group tour is perfect. If you want the day all to yourself, with your own timing and stops, a private boat from Positano port is the most complete experience.
